A break from our usual program
October 22, 2010So tomorrow night is my 5th Girl’s Night In, which Tim and I hold every year to raise money for research and support into cancers that most affect women – namely breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. It started as a celebration for mum, as this time 5 years ago she was just growing her hair back from having chemo and was about to start radiotherapy. The Cancer Council launched the idea of a girl’s night in and the event has just grown from there. This year the theme is “angels and demons” and it is VERY interesting to see just how many people are coming dressed as what – at the moment demons out number angels around 5 to 1. It is always a great night and if we are on track, this year we should raise between $1000 and $2000. This would be awesome, as it means that in the last 5 years our parties alone will have raised over $11 000 for the cancer council. You can online here. There are lots of reasons why I do this, but one of them is it makes me stop and remember (amongst all of my whining about my health, hard training and other stuff) that all in all, my life is pretty bloody good. In nearly all cases, I have choices in what I can do when it comes to getting healthier and fitter and I can do it (more or less) on my own terms. When you get something like breast cancer, that world of choices shrinks to a few choices, all of which have some incredibly unpleasant elements. So yeah, this post is a break from our usual program – this is the time to stop, think and work out what difference you can make and what you would want someone to do if you were the one who was diagnosed with a pretty scary disease.
OK, that’s the serious part done with. Some of you I will see tomorrow night and the other will be relieved to hear I will be back to posting about how hard my life is in the near future
