You’ve read about me going on about how much I miss cheese etc and when I checked today, the bastard dairies were still making it, so I’ve had to come up with a new tactic I like to call “food avoidance”. Yep, you heard me right, food avoidance. Not in the “I refuse to let anything pass my lips” or hiding in the cupboard kind of avoidance, just a few tricks that help me deal with my sad wedges/cheese/pizza/chips addiction. I find it really hard when I go out to lunch to order healthy – yeah, I know. I have heard the talks too from well meaning but totally insane diet counsellors along the lines of “just order a grilled fish and salad”. YEAH RIGHT, THAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN – NOT!!!!!!!! What these irritatingly serene people don’t realise is that when you have been making mainly crappy food choices for a good 15 years or more, just suddenly turning into the patron saint of healthy ordering just ain’t going to happen with one quick “buck up, little camper” speech. What I’ve worked out is that whilst I enjoy the food, I also enjoy the conversation, so this week what I’ve done is instead of going “oh well, I’ll just be strong” (because that track record is about as strong as the zips in some of those new super swimsuits that the Italian swim team were trying out at the world championships recently), I’ve just started doing something different – I eat a meal I’ve bought in about 30 minutes before we’re due to go out and then just have a coffee once we get there. Yeah I know, so simple it seems stupid, but it works. That doesn’t mean I don’t sit there and openly covet the chips on my friends plates, but I don’t eat them or order any myself. This has led to a few teary moments when ponder on the unfairness of everything, but hey, I am hoping that with luck, chips will still be there when I finish this weight loss. Not too about the dairies though – I may need to nobble them temporarily in order to get over the cheese envy I get whenever someone orders a BLT.
Just in case some of you were wondering, I did do some research into Patron Saints to see if there was one for weight loss. So far, I can’t find one. There are plenty for resisting temptation, but hey, as the famous man said “I can resist everything except temptation”. I Did find this though, which is kind of cute. I am quite taken with the vision of someone jogging with a rosary.
